  • Fire!

The first news item on Yahoo! News: "Thousands evacuate as wildfire destroys Los Angeles homes". I was indifferent. California gets fires all the time.

An hour later I started smelling ash. I stepped outside and and saw the eerie, red glow. Then it occured to me that I was living in L.A. County again.

It's fifty miles north of here, so I should be safe. But my lungs absolutely hate it. Especially when it starts raining ash. I pray for all the people who've lost their homes and hope the fire gets contained soon.

  • Be Careful What You Wish For

Be careful what you wish for, because sometimes God grants your wishes. We sometimes pray for the things that we believe will be the solutions to their problems. However, I think it's better to put your trust in God and let Him guide you toward the right path.

"Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we have also forgiven our debtors. And lead us not to temptation but deliver us from the evil one."

  • Media Objectivity and Prop 8

I'm really not interested in having another Prop 8 discussionment. It seems most people are extremely ill-informed on what Prop 8 actually does and current California and Federal law. Instead, I'm going to address media objectivity or, more accurately, the lack of.

I like objectivity in my news and can detect bias immediately. That's why I avoid watching MSNBC or reading the L.A. Times, both of which favor "liberal" policies too much to be a credible source of information. Society as a whole has been exposed to so much of this "liberal" thought that it cannot tolerate or fathom conservative voices. For example, some people think I'm a right-wing radical. When we did the political spectrum test in Government class, I was indeed much more conservative than the rest of the class; everyone leaned to the far left while I was dead in the center. Extreme is mainstream and moderate extreme.

The recent coverage of Prop 8 has been tinged with media bias. A quick search on Yahoo! News revealed four pages (I was afraid to look any further) of articles sympathetic to the No On 8 positions. The L.A. Times is giving extensive coverage of the No On 8 rallies and throws in stories of the protesters receiving anti-gay slurs from passer-byers. Not surprisingly, they have never mentioned any of the anger, insults, and thumbs-downs directed toward the Yes On 8 rallies. Is one form of hate more justified than the other?

The L.A. Times is, of course, extremely happy that democracy won and Obama was elected. And they're extremely unhappy that democracy won and Prop 8 passed. I suppose democracy should only matter if one likes the results.

Perhaps the reason people are so ill-informed on Prop 8 is because the media chooses not to inform them, opting instead to disguise their own opinions with journalism.
